Thinking about buying a Gucci Marmont bag?
Wondering if the Gucci Marmont bag is worth it for you?
I’ve been watching these bags explode in popular for a few years now. And they don’t show any signs of slowing down.
So should you invest in one of these bags?
Will they hold their value in the long run?
Well, the fashion world is so unpredictable that nobody can really say for sure.
But I thought I’d do a brief post on the Gucci Marmont bag with some fun facts, pros and cons that you may not have considered.
That way you can make your own educated decision as to whether a Gucci Marmont bag is right for you.
Is The Gucci Marmont Bag Worth it? What to Consider
Gucci Marmont Bag 101
The Gucci Marmont bag is not one specific bag. Rather, it’s a style or line of bags.
You can identify the line by the iconic GG logo on the bags. The logo is actually a nod to the 1970s GG logo.
Gucci is a bit different than some designers in that they seem to develop certain “looks” and then fit different styles of bags around those looks.
An example of this is the Gucci Zumi logo look or the Gucci Dionysus look (see below) – both of which are very distinct looks – but placed on a number of different styles of bags.
The Marmont logo is it’s own distinct look with the double-overlapping G’s. However you can find this look on a number of different bags – from flap bags to top handle bags to clutches to WOC’s and more.
There are also Marmont camera bags, belt bags, larger totes and even Marmont shoes and wallets.
However, despite the range of products and price ranges, the most popular styles (judging by what I’ve seen on the street and social media) are the Gucci Marmont Flap bag (also called the shoulder bag) – seen below – and the Gucci Marmont Top Handle bag (also called the Lady bag).
Another option is the Marmont Crossbody bag which is a more affordable, popular option as well.
I could be wrong – but those seem to be the 3 specific styles I see popping up on the street and on social media the most these days. So they will probably be the ones that will best hold their value over time.
Gucci Marmont Bag Review – Pros
From reading reviews over the years and talking to several girlfriends that own these bags, I think one of the main benefits are that these bags hold up REALLY well.
The strong calf leather on these bags is scratch-resistant and a lot of reviewers rave that they can bump up against cars, walls, floors etc with their bag and there’s not-a-scratch. (This is in stark contrast to some other quilted designer bags out there which are renown for getting scratched up – not mentioning any names…)
Plus, I think the quilted look on this bag just brings your look up to another level. It adds a more elegant look to the bag and your outfit.
So from that perspective, if you’re looking for an elegant, quilted-style designer bag that you don’t have to be overly gentle with (because maybe you’re a busy Mom or you’re like me and really put your bags through the ringer) – then this is a great option for you.
Another pro is the sheer range of styles, prices and sizes on these bags. Basically if you like the Marmont look, you can find a bag in your price point and size preference that is perfect for you.
That also bodes well for the bag holding it’s value. If everyone can find a style and size they like, the bag is likely to stick around and be in use for many years to come.
You can also get these bags in other looks like velvet and even raffia – but for the most part, the leather seems to be the most popular choice.
Let’s talk about the quilting on this bag.
You may have noticed that the bag is sometimes called the Gucci Matelassé leather bag. No, that’s not a confusing label thrown in there to make the bag name harder to pronounce.
Matelassé is actually a style of quilted leather:
“Matelassé is a weaving or stitching technique yielding a pattern that appears quilted or padded. Matelassé may be achieved by hand, on a jacquard loom, or a quilting machine. It is meant to mimic the style of hand-stitched quilts made in Marseilles, France. It is a heavy, thick textile that appears to be padded, but actually has no padding within the fabric.”
So that makes a bit more sense as to why some stores list the bags as a “Gucci Marmont Matelassé bag”
Another thing people like is the chain on many of these bags.
You can double them up and use them as a shorter shoulder bag – or use the single chain and wear the bags as a crossbody. And the chains also have a leather part at the top that sits on your shoulder – making it a lot more comfortable than having a chain digging into your shoulder.
Again – that just adds to the versatility and wearability of these bags.
Another point in the Gucci Marmont bag’s favor?
The logo. Everyone wants logos these days – and I can’t see that changing anytime soon.
I can see why – if you’re going to spend the money, you want people to know it’s a Gucci. I mean….it’s a GUCCI. Why wouldn’t you want people to know that?
So those are some points that might make a Gucci Marmont bag worth it for you.
Are there any cons to this bag?
Gucci Marmont Bag Review – Cons
The main con I see to this bag is that it doesn’t have the kind of history of, say, the Chanel classic flap, the Lady Dior or even the Gucci Bamboo handle or Gucci Jackie bag.
All of those bags have been around for over 20 years and continue to be fashionable year after year. The Gucci Marmont bag has only been around since around 2014 -2015.
So as popular as it is, it just doesn’t have the history behind it to say it’s going to be popular in another 20 years.
Still, that may not matter to you since – because it’s so popular right now – you could always resell yours if you get tired of it. (There is a very strong resale market for these bags.)
Then again, this bag also doesn’t command the high prices that these other iconic bags command – so it’s more affordable.
Gucci has started to raise the prices on these bags just slightly ($100 year over year). So you never know – it might turn out to be a fantastic investment if these bags continue to be popular and the prices are higher in 5 years.
So is the Gucci Marmont Worth Your Money?
Overall, the Gucci Marmont bag is a lightweight, sophisticated, hard-wearing bag that you can get in a range of styles to suit your taste. If you’re not overly-gentle with your bags – but you still want a chic, elegant-looking bag, then this is a great option, especially with the scratch-resistant leather.
It’s popularity has soared since it was introduced – and doesn’t show signs of slowing anytime soon – which is always a good sign.
There’s also a strong resale market for this bag – mainly in the Matelassé leather shoulder/flap or top handle bags.
The only real risk that I can see is that this bag has not been around long enough to be considered an “iconic” bag by some people. I think it’s still in the trendy “it-bag” phase.
Then again, all iconic bags start out as “it-bags”. So with continued popularity, the Gucci Marmont may just be an iconic bag in the making.
